Services
for Teen Girls
During
the course of CIR's research on domestic violence
and teens, teen mothers disclosed that they were
currently experiencing severe difficulties with
escaping domestic violence due to a lack of temporary
or permanent housing opportunities. CIR began to
investigate the issue and became increasingly aware
of the lack of adequate services available to low-income
teens. The Services to Teens Project evolved as
a direct result of that investigation and involves
information gathering, policy advocacy, community
planning, and public education around important
issues affecting pregnant and parenting low-income
teens. The overall purpose of the project is to
document the service and educational needs of low-income
teen girls, especially those who are either pregnant,
parenting or at risk of becoming pregnant. Our goal
is to determine how a community-based human services
infrastructure could be developed to better serve
these girls in Chicago. Currently CIR is researching
the housing needs of pregnant and parenting teens
throughout Illinois as well as the educational opportunities
afforded pregnant and parenting teens in Chicago.
